Ruin

When we pulled up outside the little cottage, Nox muttered something about it being a “shack.” I thought it was kind of cute. The clapboard exterior was all soft if faded pastels, with a narrow front porch where the inhabitants could sit and gaze out over the lawn to the rocky beach. The strip of sand and pebbles stretched about five feet before reaching the edge of the lake. It had a peaceful atmosphere—maybe the right word was “quaint.”

Peyton didn’t seem to think too much of it, though, even with it being a place she’d spent time at as a kid. She’d told us it belonged to friends of her family who lived out of town and didn’t use the cottage in the fall. Her parents had a spare key, but there was no official connection between them and the property that the Gauntts could trace. She led us around the small building with a faint grimace that didn’t budge.

“There are only two bedrooms,” she said as she unlocked the front door. “But the couch in the living room is a pullout. And there should still be a couple of air mattresses stashed in the closet from when they’d have larger get-togethers here.”

“That’s plenty,” Lily assured her. “We appreciate getting any kind of place to stay that’s away from where the Gauntts’ lackeys are looking for us.”

Apparently Peyton had grown up near here in one of the towns a few over from Lovell Rise, farther along the edge of the large lake. We were almost directly opposite the marsh here—if I squinted, I could make out a greenish blur against the shoreline on the other side of the water.

That didn’t mean the marked people the Gauntts had incited to hunt for us wouldn’t come out this way, but hopefully even if they did, they’d have no idea that Lily’s revamped car was the one they were supposed to be keeping an eye out for. It has a shiny new coat of gray paint thanks to Jett—“the color people are least likely to pay attention to,” he’d said—and a slightly redesigned frame that had turned it more modern-looking than before.

Lily’s lips pursed a little whenever she looked at it, as if it pained her seeing her car transformed into a different one, but Jett had assured her that he could change it back as soon as the Gauntts stopped being such dicks about everything.

He and Kai had shoved their motorcycles into the garden shed on the property, which had been just big enough to accommodate all of them except the back wheel. They’d closed the door as well as they could and draped a sheet of tarp over the bikes’ rears so they wouldn’t be identifiable.

Peyton hadn’t said much during all that. She hadn’t talked much in general since we’d come to her to make our appeal. With the door now open, she hesitated on the porch before offering the key to the cottage to Lily.

“I’ll need it back afterward,” she said.
